What's up RISING FANS!!! My Name's Tommy Starr...Frontman for RISING! Well let's see here, a little bit about me. I have been singing for almost 20 years. I started back in the day when I was about 8 singing a little "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" on my Dad's christmas albums. He was a singer for most of his life and I grew up listening to his music and recording songs with him on his albums. He really got me into oldies music and my Mom made sure she made me fully aware growing up that rock music was "The Devil" LOL! Gotta love moms! My Brother was all about rock music and it was all he listened to. And I'll have to admit, it didn't sound too bad through the wall between our bedrooms. My first rock albums I ever bought were Guns N' Roses' "Appetite For Destruction" and Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood". I loved 'em! From that point on it was pretty much all about 80's metal until I bought Creed's "My Own Prison" and STP's "Core". From that point on, I pretty much became a faithful servant to all types of rock and metal. I was hooked. I hadn't really done alot of singing around that time until I was about 16 and became addicted to karaoke. I went obsessively. However, my singing didn't exactly reflect my specific love of music. I shyed away from singing all the rock and metal and just stuck to oldies, country, and pop. I assumed there was no way i could ever belt that style of music out. Well then, once again, my Brother came along and started getting involved in my karaoke habit and didn't hesitate to switch my singing over to what he knew I was passionate about. He told me to just try it and once again, he got me hooked! I was very much into Creed and decided to try "Torn". From that point on it was all about rock and metal songs! I sang karaoke for about the next 7 years, even starting my own karaoke business where I began to learn how to perform and put on shows for large audiences. Through this process, I began experimenting with different vocal styles and abilities such as different levels of rock/metal screams. Which included deep, booming roars and higher, raspier screams. I played around with it and eventually, found it to be very natural for me. However, over the years, I have adapted several styles of vocals that I use during my performances to try and offer the closest I can to the original artist. In spring of 2005, I finally hit my goal and joined a cover band for the first time. Karaoke after that many years just became a headache and I longed for bigger things. We called ourselves "Hairy Baby" and played around the metro and outside of the metro for about 3 years. However, I just wasn't happy with the style of music and where the band was going. The guys in the band were real cool but it just got to the point where it wasn't the right fit for me anymore. That's when I finally landed my dream....lead singer in a band with my Brother and Best Friend.....a band known as RISING!!! This had been a working progress for a few years. All it came down to was the right drummer. After almost a dozen different Drummers, some just auditions, and others that we tried to work with, we found Chris and we were ready to hit the stage! We played with Chris for almost a year, totalling almost 40 gigs throughout Minnesota and a few in Wisconson. As of May 2009, the time came for Rising to take their dream to the next level, which resulted in us having to part ways with Chris. We replaced Chris with "Shadow Stone's" Donny March. Quickly, Donny has proven to us that he has what it takes and is ready to follow us as we head into the next level. Each day that goes by, we work harder and harder at becoming one of the top cover acts in the Twin Cities. Armed with the passion, determination, and talent it takes to achieve it.
